Floating the Big River through Washington County
The Big River runs through Washington County and is a recreational float stream, but water levels and access points are conditions to check, not constants.
The Big River winds through Washington County, past Washington State Park, and is used for floating, paddling, and fishing. Like most Ozark-edge streams, it is best treated as a conditions-dependent resource: water levels rise and fall with rain, and what is an easy float one week can be too low or too high the next. The Missouri Department of Conservation is the authoritative source for the Big River as a float and fishing stream, including access points, species, and any advisories. Because this river also drains historic mining country, MDC and DNR guidance on fish consumption or sediment is worth checking rather than assuming. Do not rely on guesses about current levels; confirm access and conditions through MDC before planning a trip, and check the latest advisories.
