Moving counties can change which tax receipt you need

Taney County's collector explains that vehicle licensing may require the tax receipt from the Missouri county where the owner lived on January 1.

If you moved to Taney County from another Missouri county, your plate paperwork may still point backward. The Taney County Collector’s moving information says vehicle licensing can require a tax receipt from the county where you lived on January 1 of the previous year.

That catches people who moved to Branson, Forsyth, Hollister, or a lake-area address after the assessment date. The car is here now, but the tax receipt may belong to the county where the January 1 record was created.

Before renewing plates, gather your title or registration, insurance, inspection paperwork if needed, and the right county tax receipt. If you did not owe tax, ask the appropriate county about a statement of non-assessment.
