Historic county buildings have a commission trail
St. Louis County's Historic Buildings Commission grew out of county park historic-building work, including Jefferson Barracks and Faust Park.
Jefferson Barracks and Faust Park are more than park names in St. Louis County. They are part of the county’s historic-building trail. The Historic Buildings Commission grew from historic buildings acquired with Jefferson Barracks Park and later preservation work at Faust Park.
That gives local history researchers a different starting point. Some building questions belong with county parks and preservation records, not only with a library, museum, city hall, or private owner. If the structure is tied to the county park system, the commission is the county preservation lane.
The distinction is useful because St. Louis County has many layers of historic places. County-owned park resources, municipal landmarks, state sites, federal sites, and private properties can sit near each other on the same map while being managed by different people.
