The City departments directory is a county-equivalent cheat sheet

Because St. Louis is an independent city, the official departments directory is often the quickest way to find county-style offices inside City government.

St. Louis City can feel confusing because it does city work and county-equivalent work in the same government. The official departments directory is a useful map for that structure.

The directory lists offices such as the Building Division, Citizens’ Service Bureau, Collector of Revenue, Land Records, License Collector, Marriage Records, Parks, Personal Property, Real Estate Tax, Recorder of Deeds and Vital Records Registrar, and more. Those are not all the same kind of service, but they are all City offices.

Before searching for a county department, check whether the City already lists the office. It can save time when a tax, deed, permit, license, or service request crosses normal city/county categories.
