The Katy Trail begins in St. Charles County

The eastern end of the statewide Katy Trail is in St. Charles County, running between Machens and a trailhead in historic St. Charles along the Missouri River.

The Katy Trail is Missouri’s long rail-trail, and its eastern end sits in St. Charles County. Missouri State Parks says the trail runs between Clinton and Machens, with Machens marking the far eastern tip. There is a trailhead in historic St. Charles, and much of the route closely follows the Missouri River. The river setting is part of the draw, and it is also a reminder that the trail runs through a floodplain. So conditions can change after high water. The trail links river towns and the wine country to the west, which makes it a popular spot for walking and biking. For trailheads, mileage, and current conditions, check the Missouri State Parks site before you go, especially after heavy rain or flooding.
