Why the county seat is Huntsville, not Moberly
Randolph County's seat is small Huntsville, not the much larger city of Moberly. That shapes where the courthouse and main county offices sit, so it helps to know where to go for county business.
Randolph County has a classic county-seat surprise: the courthouse is in Huntsville, not Moberly. Huntsville is the smaller town near the center of the county, while Moberly is the better-known city for shopping, college, rail history, and daily services.
The split goes back to the county’s early civic history. Landholders gave ground for Huntsville, and the county contracted to build its first brick courthouse there in 1831. Moberly grew later, tied strongly to railroad development in the 1800s.
For county business, keep that history in mind. Property records, deeds, tax matters, and court errands may route to Huntsville even when the rest of the day pulls you toward Moberly. Check current office addresses before the trip.
