The Platte Purchase added the county to Missouri
Platte County was part of the 1830s Platte Purchase that extended Missouri's northwest corner onto land that had been Indigenous territory, important and sensitive history.
Platte County is part of Missouri because of something called the Platte Purchase. This happened in the 1830s. The Platte Purchase pushed Missouri’s edge to the northwest, all the way to the Missouri River. It added a band of new counties to the state. But that land was not empty. It had been the home of Native nations for a long time. Before Missouri took it in, Native peoples were forced to move away. This is hard and important history. It should be told with care, not skipped over. If you want to learn more, the State Historical Society of Missouri is a trusted place to start. Treat the story of these Native nations and their displacement with respect and good sources.
