Old Tri-State mining areas are worth checking, calmly

Newton County sits in the historic Tri-State lead-zinc mining district, which left mine waste and documented cleanup records that are worth checking calmly rather than fearing.

Long ago, Newton County was part of the Tri-State mining district. That was a big lead and zinc mining area centered near Joplin that reached into Kansas and Oklahoma. The mining left waste behind. Some of it is a gravelly leftover called chat. The federal government keeps records on these places and on the cleanup work. There is no need to panic. You can read these records yourself. The U.S. EPA Superfund program and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (the state office for land and the environment) both keep them. A lot of cleanup has already been done across the wider district over the years. If you are thinking about buying property near old mining spots, take one calm step. Look up the current status of that exact spot through EPA Superfund records and Missouri DNR. It is a place to check, not a reason to worry.
