Newton County's flag is a map of its communities
Newton County's official flag uses stars to represent its cities and villages, including a northwest cluster for the Joplin-area suburbs inside the county.
Newton County’s official website tells a civic-geography story through its county flag. The county says its commission authorized the first official county flag in 2011. The design uses a blue field with gold stars scattered across it, with the stars representing the villages, towns, and cities of Newton County.
The largest star is slightly off center for Neosho, the county seat. The county also says the cluster of stars in the northwest corner represents the part of Joplin and its suburbs that lie inside Newton County.
That is a useful visual clue for newcomers. Newton County is not only Neosho, and it is not only the Newton County side of Joplin. Its official list includes places such as Diamond, Fairview, Granby, Seneca, Newtonia, Redings Mill, Saginaw, Shoal Creek Drive, and other villages and localities.
