A New Madrid real estate tax bill follows the property
New Madrid County tells buyers and owners that real estate tax liability remains with the property, so unpaid taxes need to be checked during a sale.
New Madrid County’s real estate tax page gives buyers a plain warning: the tax liability on real estate remains with the property. The county says that when ownership changes, the new owner is liable for any unpaid taxes.
That is why a closing or private sale should include a tax check, not just a deed signing. The county also says tax bills are sent to the mailing address in the tax file when the bill is printed, and failure to receive a statement does not remove the obligation to pay taxes and late fees.
The practical move is to confirm the tax status before and after a sale. If the legal description, ownership mailing address, or assessment looks wrong, ask the right county office before payment is made. If the question is payment or delinquency, start with the collector.
