Assessor values it, collector bills it: the Maries County split

Newcomers often call the wrong office; knowing that the assessor sets value and the collector takes payment saves time and explains where an appeal goes.

Property tax in Maries County runs through two county roles, both based at the courthouse in Vienna. The assessor determines the value and classification of your real estate and personal property; the collector sends the bill and takes payment. If you disagree with a value, that is an assessor and Board of Equalization matter, not something the collector can change. Missouri reassesses real property in odd-numbered years, which is when value questions tend to surface. The State Tax Commission sets the statewide framework for assessment ratios, classifications, and appeals, while the Maries County assessor and collector handle the local records, bills, and receipts. In a small county the offices are close at hand, but knowing which one does what is still the fastest way to get a tax question answered.
