Jefferson County driveways can trigger a right-of-way permit

Jefferson County requires a driveway permit for private or commercial driveways constructed on county right-of-way.

A driveway off a Jefferson County road can turn into a Public Works errand before the first load of rock arrives. Private and commercial driveways built on Jefferson County right-of-way need a county driveway permit.

The first question is not the gravel size. It is who maintains the road. Jefferson County keeps a county-maintained road list and property viewer for that check. A city street, state highway, private lane, and county road can each send the same-looking driveway question to a different office.

For a new entrance, a changed driveway, or land where access is part of the purchase, confirm the road layer first. If Public Works maintains it, use the county driveway permit materials before work begins.
