The Missouri River links Cole County to the Katy Trail

Jefferson City sits on the Missouri River across from the Katy Trail, with a pedestrian connection, and the river bottoms have flooded, so the river is both amenity and flood factor.

Jefferson City sits on the south bank of the Missouri River, with the Katy Trail running along the north bank and a pedestrian/bicycle connection across the river. That makes the long rail-trail accessible from the capital. The river is also a flood factor: the low north-bank bottoms (the Cedar City area) have flooded in major events. For residents the river is both a recreation link and a reason to check flood-zone status on low-lying ground. Missouri State Parks is the source for Katy Trail access, and FEMA for flood zones.
