County building permits apply outside city limits

Cole County building-code pages point to permits required in unincorporated areas, while Jefferson City and other cities have their own permit paths.

A building project near Jefferson City can have a simple first question: city or unincorporated county?

Cole County’s permit path is for county jurisdiction. Building plans are required for new residential, commercial, and addition permits, and county building codes apply to permits required in unincorporated areas. Inside Jefferson City, the city building-regulations process may be the right path instead.

That boundary check belongs at the start of a project. A shed, addition, new home, or commercial job can lose time if the owner starts with the wrong office.

For unincorporated Cole County, begin with county Public Works and Planning early. For a Jefferson City address, use the city’s permit office.
