Northern Missouri
Battle of Athens State Historic Site marks Missouri's northernmost Civil War battle
Clark County contains the site of the northernmost Civil War battle fought in Missouri, preserved as a state historic site, which anchors the county's heritage and a serious local history.
In the far northeast corner of Clark County, you’ll find the Battle of Athens State Historic Site. It sits along the Des Moines River, near the small river town of Athens. Missouri State Parks calls this Missouri’s northernmost Civil War battle. The fight happened here in 1861. (The Civil War was the war between the Northern and Southern states.) The site keeps the battlefield safe, along with old historic buildings. Missouri State Parks runs it. They are the best source for the history, the grounds, and visiting details. This is serious history, not a fun tourist story. It is best understood through the state’s own telling, not dramatized versions. If you want to learn the county’s past, start here. Before you visit, check current hours and access with Missouri State Parks.
