Rodgers Theatre gives downtown Poplar Bluff an Art Deco landmark
The Rodgers Theatre Building is a National Register-listed downtown Poplar Bluff landmark, one block north of the courthouse square.
One block north of the courthouse square, Rodgers Theatre gives downtown Poplar Bluff a landmark that is not about river or floodplain. The National Register nomination places the building at North Broadway and Pine Street, at 204-224 North Broadway.
The 1949 building combined theater and commercial space, with Art Deco and Art Moderne elements, a large theater sign, and a glass tower. Those details are the safe way to talk about the landmark without drifting into informal “everybody knows” stories.
For Butler County, the theater helps explain downtown Poplar Bluff as a courthouse-and-commercial district. County government, old retail blocks, rail history, and midcentury entertainment all sit close together in the same part of town.
