On-site sewer permits start with Butler County Health

Butler County Health Department says it is the regulating authority for local on-site sewage work and reviews state permit packets before construction.

Outside Poplar Bluff’s sewered areas, septic work is not just a contractor call. Butler County Health Department is the local regulating authority for on-site sewage systems.

The state construction permit route runs through the local health department. Staff review the application packet, soil morphology report, and site before a construction permit is issued. The department can give technical help and a list of registered installers or soil evaluators, but it does not design the system for you.

For a buyer, owner, or installer, ask early about the existing system, soil evaluation, permit packet, and final inspection. A rural Butler County address may have a very different wastewater path than a Poplar Bluff city lot.
