Hunting

What's new this year

A few important things changed for the 2026 / 2026–27 season. Here are the ones most hunters need to know.

The short list

What changed this year

Out-of-state deer hunters: one buck, not two

For 2026, nonresidents may take only one antlered deer (it used to be two). Nonresident landowners still get two.

Out-of-state spring turkey hunters: one bird, not two

Nonresidents may take one bearded turkey in spring 2026. Residents and nonresident landowners still get two.

CWD rules simplified

MDC removed the statewide antler-point restriction and the big CWD Management Zone. Instead, deer must be tested in selected counties listed each year in the Fall Deer & Turkey booklet. A feed/mineral ban continues in counties with CWD and within about 10 miles.

New $60 Non-Resident Migratory Bird Permit

Starting with the 2026 season, every nonresident hunting migratory birds needs this new permit, on top of the federal duck stamp.

More black bear permits

MDC raised the number of bear permits to 2,000 and the harvest quota to 60 bears, because Missouri's bear population keeps growing.

Coming for 2027: a public-land deer permit for nonresidents

The Conservation Commission gave initial approval to a $165 Nonresident Public Land Deer Hunting Permit for the 2027 season. It is proposed, not yet in effect.

Before you hunt

Missouri Porch explains; the MDC decides.

Data current for the 2026 / 2026–27 season. Last checked against MDC: 2026-06-18. Dates, prices, quotas, and county rules change every year. Confirm with MDC before you hunt.

This is a plain-English summary, not the law. Always check the current MDC regulations before you hunt. As MDC puts it, the booklet is NOT a legal document and regulations are subject to revision during the year.
